Pressing Oranges: an Euro-Med Project Aimed to Share Experiences on How to Better Serve Diverse Audiences within Libraries
Last modified: 2009-10-29
Abstract
The presentation will show the results of a series of seminars and workshops held in 2009, counting on the participation of international experts from countries that have a wide experience in dealing with diverse library audiences, put together by a large working group called “Libraries for Inter-Cultural Dialogue”. The group is based on the idea that international cooperation among libraries and information centres is a good tool for sharing ideas, experiences, and know-how. The group seeks collaboration and aims to enlarge participation of other institutions in this kind of programs. The presentation will focus on three main issues:
- emphasizing the European-wide aspect of the program: Italy, Spain, France, Germany, but counting also with the important experience within the United States of America;
- emphasizing the practical aspects of “what libraries do” to ease all integration processes;
- emphasizing creativity as a way to reach new tools for engaging people: storytelling, writing, performing arts, music, painting, film and video making, dancing, cooking and reproducing cultural and social events at the library. Kids are considered a key element, as in many occasions they are the hook between their original culture and the new one.
