The @SSM (Archivio Storico Mediterranean Historic Multimedia Archive project) is an initiative promoted by the Catania State Archives and supported by the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali - Direzione Generale degli Archivi - (Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities - General Archive Administration), promoted by the Archivio di Stato di Catania (State Archive of Catania) with the participation of several of the most prestigious Italian State Archives, true and proper capitals of Mediterranean memory. It has great cultural value and is structured on a complex international information system. The @SMM will promote a reinterpretation of second-millennium Mediterranean history through a huge mass of documents and cartographic collections preserved in the historical archives of Italy and other Mediterranean countries that have been digitized, catalogued and organized into a database in a single multimedia archive that can be used on-line through a multilingual portal equipped with innovative Knowledge Management search functions.
