Abstract
Today’s society is pluricultural and has to be treated as such. In the case of Gandia, with a population of 80.000 inhabitants, of which 25% are foreigners, we reconsidered the use of public libraries and designed a project, in 2003, directed at the immigrant population, who we hoped would participate in the design of the new work plan for the municipal libraries. Since having set up the project, we have improved access to information for newly arrived citizens, and made it possible for them to participate in the majority of the town’s cultural activities. Our current objective is to promote the creation of a network of European libraries which work with multicultural populations, which will carry out collaboration and exchange projects, with the aim to increase communication and improve our user service for other nationalities.
